Slow Travel – The New Way To Vacation

What is slow travel, also known as slow movement? Simple take your typical vacation, and slow it down by 50% or more. Slow travel is quickly evolving, no more rushing from one ‘must see’ to another, and arrive home feeling exhausted.

Lets break it down further imagine the experiences you would have, and what you would bring back with you if you planned these elements into your next Vacation.

Transportation: Try to avoid flying to your desired destination, of course depending on how far you need to go this is not out of the question, as the real quality of the vacation will be when you arrive, but getting there is half the journey right?

Look into traveling by car, bus or train. These forms of transportation obviously fit better for slow travel. You will gain many more experiences with your surroundings.

Home away from home: Slow travelers stay in one place for at least a week. Consider holiday rentals, as in houses or cottages, apartments, and villas. Such accommodations are fully equipped for slow travelers. You can move right in, and have everything you need.

Hotels do not fit as well for the slow traveler, as part of the experience is shopping, and cooking foods within the culture you’re visiting.

Local experience: This is where the slow travel quality of a vacation really comes in. You’re not just staying; you are living within the culture. Go explore the local area starting close to where you are staying as you can do this on foot.

Mingle with local people, and do some shopping, remember you may be cooking when you return to your home away from home. Soak in all the local life.

After exploring the immediate local area you could ride a bike, hire a car, travel by train or other local transportation to soak in more of the great scenery, and events. If time allows you could even get involved in the local activities.

Try slow travel next time you plan a trip. You will be amazed how refreshed you are when you return, and what you actually bring back with you on top of all those great pictures you took!
